How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home (With Size Chart)

8 min readGold AI team

To measure your ring size at home, wrap a thin paper strip around the base of your finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length in millimeters. That number is your finger's circumference, which is also your European and Israeli size. For example, 51.9 mm is EU size 52, or about US size 6.

How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home (With Size Chart)

How do you measure ring size with string or paper?

This is the most common at-home method. You need a thin strip of paper (or non-stretchy string), a pen and a ruler. Paper is better than string, which tends to stretch and give a result that is too small.

  1. Cut a strip of paper about 5 mm wide and 10 cm long.
  2. Wrap it around the base of the finger you'll wear the ring on: snug, but not tight.
  3. Mark the spot where the end of the paper meets itself.
  4. Check that the loop can slide over your knuckle. If it can't, the ring won't either, so go slightly larger.
  5. Unroll the strip and measure from the end to your mark in millimeters.
  6. Find that number in the circumference column of the chart below.

Measure two or three times and average the results. If you land between two sizes, choose the larger one.

How do you find ring size from an existing ring?

If you have a ring that fits the right finger well, this is the most accurate home method. Lay it on a ruler and measure the inside diameter: the distance between the inner edges at the widest point, not including the metal itself. Match it to the diameter column in the chart.

Make sure the ring you measure is a similar width to the new one and is worn on the same finger of the same hand. Fingers on your dominant hand are often slightly larger.

Getting sized by a jeweler or with a ring sizer

The most accurate option is a ring sizer: a set of metal sizing rings in exact sizes that you try on until one fits. Any jeweler can size you in a minute, and inexpensive plastic sizers are available to order online. Plastic belt-style sizers are decent, but less precise than metal ones.

Ring size conversion chart

Israeli sizes follow the European system: the size is simply the inside circumference in millimeters. Circumference equals the inside diameter times π (about 3.14). US and UK sizes are separate scales. Values below are rounded, and manufacturers can differ slightly.

When is the best time to measure your finger?

Fingers change size through the day and with the weather. They are slimmer in the morning and in the cold, and swell slightly at the end of the day, in heat, after exercise or after a salty meal. So:

  • Measure at the end of the day at a normal temperature, not right after a hot shower or a workout.
  • Avoid measuring when your hands are very cold, or you'll get a size that's too small.
  • If your knuckle is wide and the base of your finger narrow, size for the knuckle. The ring will spin a little, and that's normal.
  • During pregnancy or significant weight change, consider waiting or choosing a design that is easy to resize.

Common ring sizing mistakes

  • Measuring the wrong finger. Ring, index and middle fingers differ, sometimes by a full size or more. Measure the exact finger you'll wear the ring on.
  • Pulling the paper or string too tight. A strip cinched hard around the finger gives a size that's too small. It should feel snug, like a ring that fits well.
  • Measuring the outside of an existing ring. Only the inner opening counts. Measuring across the metal can easily add a size or two.
  • Mixing up size scales. Sites and brands use different systems. The European/Israeli size is always the circumference in millimeters, which makes it the safest reference point.
  • Measuring only once. A single reading can mislead. Measure on different days and at different times for a reliable result.

Which finger does an engagement ring go on?

In Israel, as in most of the Western world, the engagement ring is usually worn on the left ring finger. At a Jewish wedding ceremony the wedding band is placed on the right index finger, and many people later move it to the ring finger. Size the ring for the finger it will actually be worn on day to day, not the ceremony finger.

Do wide bands need a bigger size?

Yes. A wide band covers more of your finger and feels tighter than a thin band of the exact same size. A common rule of thumb: for bands about 6 mm wide or more, go up roughly half a US size (about 1–1.5 mm in circumference). This matters most for wide wedding rings and men's bands.

The inside profile matters too. A comfort-fit band, rounded on the inside, slides over the knuckle more easily and feels a little looser than a flat-inside band. With comfort fit you can sometimes stay at your usual size even in a wider band. When you request a quote, mention the width and profile you want so the goldsmith can account for them.

Can a ring be resized after it's made?

Most plain gold bands and single-stone rings can be resized by roughly one to two sizes up or down: the goldsmith cuts the shank, adds or removes gold, solders and polishes. Some designs, however, are hard or impossible to resize:

  • Eternity rings: with stones all the way around, there is no free section to cut and solder, so resizing is rarely possible. Measure especially carefully.
  • Rings with inside engraving: resizing can damage the text. For inspiration, see our ring engraving ideas.
  • Continuous patterns or textures around the whole band are difficult to keep seamless.

At Gold AI every piece is made to order, so custom pieces can't be returned, but you get free repairs and adjustments for the first year. If the size is slightly off on a ring that can be adjusted, we'll take care of it. More details on our FAQ page.

How do I give my size when ordering a custom ring?

When you design a ring in the Gold AI design studio and request a quote, include your US size or your EU/Israeli size (circumference in mm), plus your preferred band width if it matters to you. Not sure? Just send what you measured, whether that's an existing ring's diameter or your paper strip's length, and the team will help convert it. Rings are handcrafted in about 2–3 weeks (business days) and ship insured and tracked across Israel; see shipping for details.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average ring size for women?

There's no official figure, but common women's sizes fall roughly between US 5.5 and 7 (EU 50–54), and men's between US 8.5 and 10.5 (EU 58–64). Individual variation is large, so it's always better to measure than to guess from an average.

Is EU size 52 the same as US size 6?

Approximately, yes. EU (and Israeli) size 52 means an inside circumference of about 52 mm, which corresponds to a diameter of about 16.5 mm. That is US size 6, or UK L½. Different manufacturers can vary by a few tenths of a millimeter.

How accurate is measuring with string?

String can be off by half a size or more because it stretches and doesn't always wrap evenly. A thin paper strip is more accurate, and measuring an existing ring's inside diameter is better still. For an expensive ring or an eternity band, confirm with a proper ring sizer.

Is it better to size up or down?

Slightly up. A ring that's too tight won't pass your knuckle and gets uncomfortable in warm weather. A slightly loose ring can usually be sized down relatively easily, and some designs can take a small sizing insert inside the band.

Is my ring size different on each hand?

Often, yes. Fingers on your dominant hand tend to be slightly larger, sometimes by half a size. Measure the exact finger you'll wear the ring on, on the correct hand.

How much does it cost to resize a gold ring?

It depends on the design, how much gold needs to be added, and whether stones need protecting during the work. Sizing down is usually simpler than sizing up. For Gold AI pieces, adjustments in the first year are free when the design allows it.
