Custom Jewelry: How to Order, How Long It Takes and What to Prepare

8 min readGold AI team

To order custom jewelry, you define the idea, budget, metal, stones and size; see a visualization of the design; approve a quote; and a goldsmith makes the piece, usually via CAD, a wax or 3D-printed model, casting, stone setting and polishing. Designing with AI shows you the piece within minutes, and production takes about 2–3 weeks.

Custom Jewelry: How to Order, How Long It Takes and What to Prepare

What does custom jewelry actually mean?

A custom piece is made specifically for you, to a design you helped decide, rather than taken off a shelf. It can be a small change to an existing style, like a different stone or gold color, or something entirely new: an engagement ring with an unusual setting, a necklace with your kids' names, a signet ring with a family symbol. The upside is obvious: nobody else has it. The challenge is translating an idea in your head into a gold object that can actually be made.

How does the traditional custom jewelry process work?

With a jeweler or design studio, the classic process usually looks like this:

  1. Consultation – you explain what you want, bring inspiration photos and set a budget.
  2. Sketch – the designer draws a few directions by hand or on screen, and you pick one.
  3. CAD model – a precise 3D computer model with dimensions, metal thickness and stone positions.
  4. Wax or 3D print – the model is printed in wax or a castable resin. Sometimes you can see or try it before casting.
  5. Casting – in lost-wax casting, the model is encased in a mold, the wax is burned out and molten gold fills the cavity.
  6. Stone setting – the goldsmith secures the stones in their mounts.
  7. Polishing and finishing – polishing, rhodium plating for white gold where needed, and any engraving.

This works well, but the early stages (meetings, sketches, revisions) can drag on. And often the first time you see something resembling the real piece is at the CAD stage.

How to order custom jewelry with Gold AI

Gold AI moves the visualization to the very start, so you see the piece before anyone talks about price:

  1. Describe it – write what you're imagining, in English or Hebrew. The design studio is free.
  2. AI designs it – photorealistic visualizations of your piece appear in seconds.
  3. Refine in chat – "slightly bigger stone", "rose gold", "thinner band", and you get an updated version.
  4. Request a quote – our team sends a personal quote over WhatsApp.
  5. A goldsmith reviews it – an expert goldsmith checks that the design can be made and adapts the technical details.
  6. Production – only after you approve. It takes about 2–3 weeks (business days) at partner workshops in the Ramat Gan diamond exchange district.
  7. Shipping – insured, tracked delivery across Israel, free on orders over ₪500.

The technical steps (CAD, casting, setting, polishing) are still done by goldsmiths, exactly as in the traditional process. What changes is the beginning: instead of waiting for a sketch, you explore several directions yourself. Curious how it works under the hood? Read about AI jewelry design.

What should you prepare before ordering custom jewelry?

  • Budget – a range, not a single number. Most custom pieces start around ₪2,000, and the price comes down to gold weight, labor and stones. See our gold jewelry pricing guide.
  • Size – for rings, measure first with our ring size guide. For necklaces, the length you want; for bracelets, your wrist circumference.
  • Metal – 14K (the most popular) or 18K, in yellow, white or rose. See 14K vs. 18K gold.
  • Stones – natural diamond, lab-grown diamond, a colored gemstone, or none at all.
  • Inspiration and words – what you like, and what you don't. Words like "delicate", "vintage" or "minimalist" help a lot.
  • A deadline – if there is one.

You don't need every answer upfront. If you're torn between yellow and white gold, or a diamond and a colored stone, design both and compare them side by side. That's the point of an early visualization: you decide while looking at a picture, not just imagining it.

Why the AI image isn't a production drawing

AI visualizations look very real, but they are a visualization of the idea, not an engineering drawing. The AI doesn't "know" the minimum gold thickness needed to hold a stone safely, how many prongs a diamond needs, or whether a stone of a given size fits a band of a given width. That's why an expert goldsmith reviews every design before production and adapts the details: thickness, stone sizes, setting strength and comfort. The finished piece stays true to the look and spirit of the design, but small differences driven by manufacturing are normal.

Common mistakes when ordering custom jewelry

  • Ordering at the last minute – made-to-order pieces take time. Leave a week or two beyond production time.
  • Guessing the size – a wrong ring size is the most common problem. Measure, and round up if in doubt.
  • Too many ideas in one piece – it ends up busy. Pick one main feature.
  • Designing too delicately – very thin bands and high-set stones look great in a picture but hold up less well every day.
  • Not checking the policy – custom pieces usually can't be returned. At Gold AI, made-to-order pieces aren't returnable, but you get free repairs and adjustments for the first year. Details in our FAQ.

Frequently asked questions

How much does custom jewelry cost?

It depends on gold weight, labor and stones, plus 18% VAT. A plain gold band costs less than a ring with a large center diamond, and your personal quote spells out the cost before you commit.

Do I have to pay before seeing the design?

Not at Gold AI. Designing with AI is free, and you see the piece and get a quote before paying anything. Production starts only after you approve.

Will the finished piece look exactly like the AI image?

It will stay true to the design, but a goldsmith adapts technical details such as metal thickness, stone sizes and setting strength so the piece is durable and comfortable. Small differences are normal.

Can I order a piece based on a photo I saved?

You can use a photo as inspiration and describe it in the studio. We create your own design inspired by it rather than copying another brand's design.

What if the size is wrong?

Made-to-order pieces can't be returned, but you get free repairs and adjustments for the first year where the design allows it.

Which metals can I choose?

14K or 18K gold in yellow, white or rose. 14K is the most popular choice thanks to its durability.
